We all know that juggling the responsibilities of motherhood can often feel like a never-ending marathon. From shuttling children to soccer practice, managing work deadlines, and squeezing in family dinners, it’s no wonder you sometimes forget about the most important person in the equation—you!
If you're a busy mom who feels like she's running on fumes, it’s time to hit the pause button and recharge your batteries with some much-needed self-care.
But where do you start when your to-do list is longer than your arm? Don’t worry, I'm the self-proclaimed Queen of Self-Care and I want to help you take the necessary steps to create a self-care routine(s) to nourish yourself.
Understand the Importance of Self-Care
Before diving into the routine, it’s essential to recognize why self-care is vital. It’s not just about pampering yourself; it’s about maintaining your physical, emotional, and mental health. When you take care of yourself, you are better equipped to handle the challenges of motherhood and life in general.
You know what they say on a plane. "First put your mask on, before assisting others." As mothers, we are reponsible for the well-being of others, however, it's hard to show up as your full self, when you are completely depleted.
Self-care is the culmination of all those little acts that recharge your batteries so that you can continue being the amazing caregiver that you are.
Prioritize Like a Pro
Prioritze your self-care care routine the way you prioritize getting to practices and other extra-curriulars for your children. Put it on your schedule and treat it as a non-negotiable, because it should be!
Morning Zen
Start your day with a moment just for yourself. It could be a quick meditation moment, journaling, prayer, affirmation recitation, or just a moment to sip your favorite morning beverage in peace. How you start your day, truly sets the tone for the duration of the day so be intentional with that time.
Prioritize Your Needs
Make a list of activities that rejuvenate you. This could include reading, meditating, exercising, or even taking a long bath. Prioritize these activities based on what you need most. Remember, self-care is personal, so choose what truly makes you feel good. Then carve out time in your day to do one of these things.
My lastest self-care practice is steaming my face while I do my skincare routine. It's 10 -15 minutes that makes me feel like a million bucks.
Set Realistic Goals
It’s important to set achievable goals. If you’re new to self-care, start small. Aim for 10 minutes of meditation or a 15-minute walk. As you get comfortable, gradually increase the time you dedicate to these activities.
Create a Flexible Routine
Life with children can be unpredictable, so flexibility is key. Instead of a rigid schedule, create a routine that can adapt to changes. For instance, if you planned a morning yoga session but the kids wake up early, try to fit it in later in the day or swap it out for something else on your list that might work with your schedule.
Involve Your Family and/or Friends / Set Boundaries
Communicate with your family and friends about your self-care needs. Let them know why it’s important and how they can support you. This might mean your partner or friends takes over bedtime duties once a week, or the children have a quiet time while you relax.
Often times society gives messaging that mothers should be self-sacrificial and this could not be further from the truth. Not only is it impossible to constantly pour from an empty cup, but it's essential that your children understand that the world doesn't revolve solely around their needs and desires. This helps them to develop empathy and learn to appreciate the feelings and needs of others, which is the cornerstone of building strong, healthy relationships.
Explore Quick Self-Care Ideas
For those days when time is scarce, have a list of quick self-care activities. This could be a 5-minute breathing exercise, listening to your favorite song, or enjoying a cup of tea in silence.
Connect & Communicate
Don't underestimate the power of connection. I have several friends that I stay connected to on whatsapp, IG DM, and text. On my busier days, a brief timeout to kiki always clears my headspace. While this can be challenging when you are managing a household, connection with friends is therapeutic. Be sure to nurture them.
Reflect and Adjust
Regularly reflect on your self-care routine. What’s working? What’s not? Don’t be afraid to make adjustments. Your needs may change over time, and your routine should evolve accordingly.
Remember That Self-Care is Not Selfish
Taking time for yourself is a necessity. When you feel your best, you bring your best and highest self to everything you do. Hence, those around you benefit from self-care.
Embrace self-care guilt-free. By taking time for yourself, you’re not only enhancing your own well-being but also setting a positive example for your children. Here’s to a healthier, happier you!
